EDI4STEEL is a communication network connecting ERP systems of steel producers, wholesalers, service centres and users. For this purpose, a secure platform with communication standards of the European Union has been developed. These standards have recently been approved by ISO.
The messages use the standards of the Smart Connected Supplier Network developed by TNO. TNO is an independent research organisation such as the Frauenhofer Institute. EDI4STEEL also makes recommendations for a standardised workflow of data exchange between the various ERP systems.

Standardized messages

EDI4STEEL, in cooperation with TNO, developed standard messages such as purchase order, order confirmation, despatch advice, invoice and product certificate to support the steel industry. These messages were compiled on the basis of the world standard Universal Business Language (UBL), which in turn is based on XML internet technology.

A secure network

EDI4STEEL uses the European Commission's eDelivery Building Block solution for secure and reliable electronic document exchange. Messages can be sent and received from the participants' ERP systems via an Access Point (AP) over the EDI4STEEL platform.
EDI4Steel uses the Service Metadata Publisher (SMP) and the Service Metadata Locator (SML) of the European Commission as the address book of the participants. These enable the APs to dynamically identify the IP addresses of the APs where the messages are to be delivered.

The EDI4STEEL network is managed by an independent foundation EDI4STEEL. The foundation determines the further roll-out and development of the network. EDI4Steel Support supports the foundation in the field of software and technology so that the availability and continuity of the platform is guaranteed.

Easy to join

EDI4STEEL provides the following solutions for the connection between an EDI4STEEL Access Point and ERP systems:

  • Comprehensive online documentation of the communication and infrastructure for exchanging EDI messages.

  • A secure SFTP server that allows companies to send and receive messages

  • Conversion tool with which messages can be translated from XML to IDocs (SAP) and vice versa.
EDI4STEEL provides advice for a standardised workflow of data exchange between the various ERP systems.

EDI4STEEL has been operational since June 2020. Messages are exchanged between Arcelor Mittal and a number of steel traders. Stahlwerk Thüringen and Celsa Group have shown interest and are looking into implementing their ERP systems to the platform.
